Biography

Dr. Fan is a Board Certified Surgeon. His clinical practice encompasses medical, refractive, and non-refractive surgical diseases of the cornea, anterior segment, and lens. This includes, but is not limited to, corneal transplantation, No stitch, laser-assisted microincisional cataract surgery with astigmatism and presbyopic correcting intraocular lenses, and laser vision correction (LASIK, PRK). His research interests include advances in cataract and refractive technology, dry eye management, specialty contact lenses, and applications of information technology in ophthalmology.

Dr. Fan received his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the Berkeley campus of the University of California. He also received graduate degrees from Boston University’s School of Medicine and Graduate School of Business. He has trained at internationally renowned medical centers: including a transitional year internship at Weill Cornell Medical College โ€“ New York Presbyterian Hospital Queens. Dr. Fan completed his ophthalmology residency at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in downtown Chicago- where he served as Chief Resident. He completed a cornea research fellowship at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City under Penny Asbell, MD. Dr. Fan also sought an additional year of specialized surgical fellowship training in cornea, external disease, and refractive surgery under David Schanzlin, MD, Michael Gordon, MD, and Jack Weiss, MD.

Throughout his training, he received multiple awards including Goldberg Trust Resident Research Award, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) research award in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Dr. Fan served as a Congressional Advocacy Day Ambassador for the Illinois Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He received a Congressional Letter of Commendation and recognition for his volunteer work with the Illinois Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Fan has traveled overseas and performed cataract surgeries on indigent patients in northern India. He has also served as an ophthalmic consultant for the Friends of the Congressional Glaucoma Caucus Foundation.

Dr. Fan is originally from Los Angeles and prior to his medical career, he worked in the entertainment field in front of the camera on both small and big screens. He volunteers his free time with the California Alumni Association and as a mentor to pre-med, medical students, and ophthalmology residents.

Dr. Fan’s hobbies include high-performance automobiles, technology, travel, good food, nutrition, and playing/watching sports.

He speaks Mandarin Chinese.
